Ammanford 37 Waunarlwydd 12
The welcome return of players helped Ammanford get their second win of the season against visitors Waunarlwydd. Shaun Miles, Gareth Rees made an appearance from their Premiership clubs, with Ceri Rees returning from a 10 month tour of New Zealand.
Ammanford started on fire winning a penalty within a minute of the kick off, outside half Ryan Williams took over the kicking duties. Directly from the kick off the try of the season was scored when the ball was picked up by hooker Chris Morris who fed second row Sion Williams on the half way line. Showing the benefit of running with the ball in two hands the defence seemed to be buying all his dummies, though he was actually looking for someone to pass too! All of a sudden with 15m to go he realised he could score himself and did so after a 50m run. Williams added the extras. Within 17 minutes Ammanford were 17 points up when after a fine piece of team play the ball was moved wide for centre Criag Woodall to glide through to score.
Ammanford remained in control and after a quick tap penalty by Gareth Rees the ball was eventually moved wide to find openside Tom Davies out on the wing and his strong run beat two defenders to score, 22-0.
Ammanford failed to push on and Waun gradually came back into the game. After some minutes of pressure a powerful scrum was rewarded with a penalty try. With the half coming to a close Waun were caught offside in midfield allowing Williams to add three points and the half finished 25-7.
Ammanford started the second half badly, not gathering the kick off and following this up by losing their own line out. Waun took full benefit and did not leave the home 22 until they scored through a push over try. Ammanford survived several minutes of pressure but with the introduction of prop Rhodri Jones and second row Callan Davies Ammanford’s creaky set phases became far more dependable.
From an attacking line cleanly taken by Davies Ammanford managed to gain a strong foothold inside the visitors 22. Following some strong runs by the forwards a sharp snipe by scrum half Alex Davies was followed up by one of the most delicate of offloads found centre Steff Roberts on his shoulder to score and gain the bonus point.
The scoring was rounded off when Williams glided through the tired home defence after a sustained period attack to touch down in the corner, 37-12.
Waun tried hard in the last 5 minutes and put Ammanford under a great deal of pressure but the home defence stayed strong to keep the visitors out and pushing Ammanford several places up the table. Next Saturday the second half of the season starts with the visit of Bridgend Athletic.
