Kenfig Hill Away

Kenfig Hill 7   Ammanford 17

After their third win in four games Ammanford have moved well up the table in West Central League 1. They travelled to Kenfig Hill to play “The Mules” on the back of a fine away win at Brynamman.

The game started evenly enough with firstly Ammanford pressing followed by a period of Mules pressure. A clever lineout inside their own 22 saw flanker Tom Davies dart up the blind interpassing with hooker and skipper Chris Morris only for the ball to be lost 5m from the home line. Ammanford on the attack on the Mules line were penalised and some really sharp thinking by the home outside half put in a 50m Crossfield kick to the winger who sprinted up the wing and an inside pass found scrum half, Tom Briggs, who scored the try which was converted.

Ammanford with plenty of possession finally got on the scoreboard when from a scrum, number 8 Harri McBride fed scrum half Alex Davies who’s dart drew in the defence before he found outside half Ryan Williams who went over under the posts he also added the extras. With the last move of the half Ammanford powered towards the home line only for the ref to say that Davies dropped the ball as he went over the line.

With the score level at 7 all, Ammanford had a dream start to the second half. Taking the kick off they moved the ball and Williams chipped the flat home defence, gathered his own kick, fed centre Steff Roberts who fed his fellow centre Craig Woodall who went the remaining 40m to score. Williams slotted the conversion.

Kenfig Hill came back hard and only some great cover tackling in the corner by wing Mike Rees and full back Carwyn Morris prevented a try by holding the home winger up over the line. Further pressure was held out by strong defence from forwards, Jake Guerin and George David. Ammanford eventually worked their way up the field and won a penalty that allowed Williams to extend the lead to 7-17 and giving the boys a bit of breathing space.

With The Mules trying hard to get back into the game the Ammanford pack showed their power by driving the home team off their own ball and earning a penalty to clear the lines. With this forward control through the last 10 minutes Ammanford earned their deserved win.
