League leaders are downed
Bonymaen 8 Ammanford 16
Ammanford fans travelled to league leaders Bonymaen in more hope than expectation, but were amazed with a superb all around performance and saw Ammanford leave with a well-earned and first victory of the season. This was no smash and grab and lucky last minute penalty, even the home supporters admitted the better side won and left travelling supporters puzzled and asking where has this performance been all season.
Ammanford welcomed back Craig Woodall after a two and a half year absence through shoulder surgery. The first half was an even affair with Ammanford giving as good as they got. The scrum creaked a little but the back row worked hard and the three quarter line were sound in defence and it was not until the 30th minute that after pressure under the Ammanford posts some lovely, skilful hands put the home winger over in the corner, 5-0. This was the only score of the first half and although behind the Ammanford boys took great comfort out of their performance.
The confidence gained from their first half efforts were reflected in the second half performance where from the start Ammanford dominated. Bonymaen did not have one passage of play inside the visitors 22. Ammanford soon earned their first kickable penalty which full back Steff Roberts puting over. The home side did win a 40m penalty which they put over to make the score 8-3.
Ammanford bolstered the pack with the introduction of prop Dylan Phillips, this was backed up with the bulk of Jake Baker and height of Callum Davies. This change had an immediate effect with a clean catch from Davies which allowed Ammanford to drive the lineout over the home line that allowed Phillips to score and Roberts to add the extras.
With scrum half Alex Davies controlling the game well from the base of rucks with astute box kicks that kept the home side penned in their own half. As the game progressed Bonymaen seemed to have no answers to the Ammanford strangle hold. A further penalty by Roberts and a final penalty put over by outside half Ryan Williams closed the game off and saw Ammanford win by 8- 16.
More of this in the future is the request of the supporters. The next game will be the WRU Plate game against Porth Harlequins at home next Saturday.
The BaaBaas also travelled to Bonymaen to play Bonymaen 2nd XV, but were not as successful losing to a very strong home team by 26-6. Although loosing this was a good, solid performance.
