Glynneath Home

Ammanford 29 Glynneath 27

Ammanford finished their home campaign of the season with a win over third placed Glynneath thanks to a last minute conversion by Daniel Slatery on his first team debut.

Ammanfords back row of Steffan Rees, George David and Tom Davies were prominent throughout the game through powerful running in attack and hard hitting in defence.

The game was a very fast paced with both sides trying to run from all angles. Ammanford opened the score when a poor kick out of defence was gathered by full back, Steff Howells, who countered well. The ball was moved wide and a strong run by No 8, George David, drew in the last two defenders and deft offload put wing Mike Rees over in the corner. A wide angled kick was put over by outside half Steff Roberts who not long after had to leave the field with a badly dislocated finger to be replaced by youth outside half Dan Slatery.

Glynneath showed why they are towards the top of the table and dominated much of the play resulting in a try under the posts for the loose head prop, 7-7.

Keeping up the pressure Glynneath stayed on the attack but an interception by David saw scrum half Alex Davies kick down field into an empty backfield which saw youth centre Carwyn Morris win the race to the ball.

The visitors controlled the last 15 minutes of the half firstly winning a penalty to reduce the Ammanford lead to 12 -10 and in the final play of the half take the lead with a well worked try which made the score at the half 12-17 to the visitors.

With the second half only minutes old the youth brought the home side level.  A lovely break by Slatery saw the outside half feed fellow youth centre Morris to go over in the corner.

The second half was unfortunately a sporadic event with several injuries breaking up the flow in play but this did not stop both sides from doing their best to entertain. Firstly Glynneath went back into the lead thanks to a power try by their centre, 17-24. Ammanford came back and after some pressure a snipe by scrum half Davies saw him go over in the corner, 22-24.

Entering the last five minutes the visitors won a penalty to extend the lead, 22-27. With time running out Ammanford won a 5m line out and with the last drive of the game flanker Tom Davies was pushed over the line by his fellow forwards to level the score. With the scores now level up stepped young Dan Slatery to show maturity and composure and put over the winning kick, 29-27.

Ammanford have finished the season in fifth place regardless with one game left away against table topping Ystalyfera.
