Glynneath WRU Plate

Ammanford 25 Glynneath 43

Ammanford welcomed Glynneath for a place in the last 8 of the WRU Plate Competition and although starting well the stronger visitors eventually won out.

With their first attack a catch and drive saw second row Hedd-Wyn Jones go over for the opening score. Ammanford stayed on the front foot but failed to add to their score.

With their first attack Glynneath showed why they are at the top of 1 West Central with strong direct running and good hands to power over near the posts and this was immediately followed up with a second try when the referee decided that centre Paul Davies attempted interception was indeed a deliberate knock on on his own line and awarded a penalty try and yellow card, 5-14.

Ammanford got back into the game when outside half Ryan Williams slotted over a penalty. The home sides second try came when an attacking lineout was overthrown only for the ball to bounce nicely up into Williams’s hands, who saw a gap open up and he did not need to be asked twice and took the opportunity to score. Ammanford were back into the lead 15-14.

The first half was being played at a frenetic pace with some quality rugby from both sides. The visitor’s positive rugby resulted in two more tries both from running from deep, the second try was a little fortunate that the final inside pass hit a defender on the head before falling into the wingers hands to score.

Ammanford would not lie down and they scored the seventh try of the half with another catch and drive, this time prop Rhodri Jones went over.

The second half started like the first finished with plenty of running rugby unfortunately dropped passes on their own 22 saw the visitors hack the ball through and win the race to score. However Ammanford stayed positive and from a flowing move centre Davies was put over out wide, 25-33.

The final try of the game from Glynneath, their penalty five minutes later was the final score of the game, 25-43. In a high scoring game and with players running out of steam it was a surprise that in the last twenty minutes no further points were scored. One positive for Ammanford was the game had seen four youth age players play an important part in the game.

Next week back to the bread and butter league with an away visit to Tondu.
