Resolven Home

Ammanford 44  Resolven 19

On a fresh afternoon on the Rec, Ammanford managed the full five points against a fault ridden Resolven side. Ammanford worked hard all game but were fortunate that several miss directed passes by Resolven served up several scoring opportunities which were gratefully received and finished off.

The game did not start well for the home side with flanker Gareth Isaac yellow carded for a tip tackle within the first two minutes. Several thought he was fortunate not to get a red.

With Ammanfords first positive attack they won a penalty which was slotted over by outside half Steffan Roberts , 3 – 0. A strong rip by centre Andrew Owen allowed Ammanford to catch the visiting defence flat footed, a good support line by Steffan Pryce-Griffiths put the centre through near the posts, Roberts added the extra points, 10 – 0.

Resolven attacked from deep and with a kick chase put the home defence under pressure. Full back, Jac Evans’s clearance kick was charged down and the race to the ball was won by the Resolven centre, 10-7.

A disjointed first half performance by Ammanford led to several chances being wasted, the only other score of the half was a penalty for Roberts, 13 – 7.

Resolven’s first gift to Ammanford was a miss directed pass gifting the ball to wing Dafydd Pritchard who showed the home defence a clean pair of heals from 50m out to score in the corner. An excellent touchline conversion by full back Evans extended the lead to 20-7.

Ammanford were soon rewarded with their third try when prop Lewys Jonathan ripped the ball out of the maul burst down the field before feeding supporting flanker Owen Davies who out ran the covering defence, Evans added the extra two points, 27-7.

The regular weakness of Ammanford returned failing to take the kick off gave Resolven a penalty from which they kicked into the corner and from the line out moved the ball to eventually score 27 – 12. The visitors were now on the front foot and from a scrum under the Ammanford posts a simple switch from scrum half to centre put the centre through under the posts, 27-19.

Ammanford looked unsure and several missed opportunities kept Resolven in the game. The turning point was a miss directed chip by the Resolven outside half was gathered by Evans who countered from deep, breaking the first line of defence he linked up with supporting players to eventually find Griffiths to go over for his second try and Ammanford’s bonus point. 34-19.

Resolven tried hard to get back into the game but another poor pass allowed Pritchard to grab his second interception and second try, 39-19. With the game coming to its end and the game safe Ammanford were running from all angles. With the final move of the game the ball was moved from inside their own 22 to find wing Steffan Howells clear with 60m to go. This he made look easy stepping inside the covering full back to score, 44-19.  The team is now looking forward to the visit to Bonymaen next Saturday.
