Ammanford 27 Maesteg Celtic 14

Ammanford’s third win of the season finally arrived on Saturday with the visit of Maesteg Celtic and it came with a bonus point thanks to four tries and a resolute defence.

The home side were gifted a try within the first couple of minutes when the visitors dropped a basic pass which was hacked through for flanker Tom Davies to win the race for the ball, outside half Steff Roberts added the conversion. Ammanford remained positive and from a scrum on the visitors 22m line the ball was moved sharply left for wing Steff Howells to go over in the corner, Roberts finished it off with an excellent conversion from the touchline to open up a 14-0 lead.

Using the wind advantage Ammanford remained the dominant force of the half and when Chris Grovett stole the ball from a Celtic line out the ball was moved right and a slick loop by centre Ceri Rees and a delicate blind pass from wing Daf Pritchard saw Rees score in the corner. With the half coming to a close the home side were awarded a penalty in front of the visitor’s posts and the half finished 22-0.

Taking their turn with the wind the visitors controlled the second half and it was only stout defence by Ammanford that kept the game under some kind of control.

Celtic scored early from a catch and drive line out and took Ammanford twenty minutes to mount their first attack of the second half, but when it did Celtic were penalised with a yellow card. Ammanford took full advantage and after a period of pressure a speculative long pass found Rees who fed Howells for his second of the game, Roberts added the two.

The visitors were the last to score when their centre burst onto a short pass to go over under the posts. Although Celtic pressed hard Ammanford held firm for the game to finish 27-14.

The first team were also delighted to find after the game that the club had achieved a first in the clubs history in that the first, second and third team not only played but also won.

The next home game will be a Christmas derby game against Brynamman on Dec 29th.
