Aberavon Quins Home

Ammanford 16  Aberavon Quins 10

Over the last few seasons every encounter between the two sides have been very close games and this one was no exception. In ever deteriorating conditions both sides tried their best to entertain both sets of supporters.

Ammanford started positively and soon won a penalty on the visitors 22, outside half Steff Roberts calmly put Ammanford into the lead. While trying to run the ball out of their own 22 Jake Baker was tipped over in the tackle and the visitor’s second row was lucky just to see a yellow card.

Playing into the wind Ammanford found it difficult to get out of their own half, but defended well. Quins managed to score with the last move of the half when a long kick into the corner saw Ammanford for the first time fail to clear the ball. The turnover was quickly moved wide for the visiting winger to go over in the corner. An excellent conversion saw Quins go into the half time break in the lead 3-7.

Ammanford started the second half like the first with early pressure rewarded with a penalty 6-7. Ammanfords strong front row won a second penalty to help retake the lead 9-7. The home side were in command and from a series of pick and drives close to the line saw the home team rewarded when the ball shot out of the ruck, quickly picked up by Hedd Jones who fed wing Daf Pritchard who’s twinkle toes danced through the defence to the delight of his fan club.

Second row Jake Baker picked up a shoulder injury and was replaced by Carl Rees who has hardly played this season due to work commitments, it was nice to see him back on the field.

If Ammanford thought they had won the game they had forgotten about the Quins resolve. The last quarter of the game belonged to the visitors. They put the home side under persistent pressure which led to a yellow card for Baker and a simple penalty, 16-10. For all their hard work and effort this was the final score of the game, with the home supporters glad to hear the final whistle.
